These presentations are free and open to the public. Persons can attend programs of interest or attend all presentations for program certification. This year’s curriculum will offer two different certification programs:

Master Gardener Certification               Cost: $100

Requirements – Attend all 11 presentations, complete 10 hours of extension workshop education , complete on-line quizzes and exams, complete weed collection project, complete home landscape project, complete 1000 ft2 garden design project, complete 40 hours of community service in gardening activities.

Advanced Gardener Certification:               Cost: Free

Requirements – Attend 9 of the 11 presentations, complete 20 hours of service/learning activities.

Jan –Pruning – How, When, and on What

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about pruning trees, shrubs, bushes, and vines. From hydrangeas to blueberries, pruning is something that everyone can do to improve the health of their landscape and fruit producing plants.

Feb – Manage Your Lawn

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about lawn management. Lawn management is expensive and time consuming – why not do it right? Learn about fertilizing, mowing, seeding, and pest management in your lawn.

Mar – Soil, Composting, and Plant Nutrients

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about soil, composting, and plant nutrients. Turn your kitchen scraps into valuable fertilizer, learn about soil testing, and build the foundation for landscape and garden success.

April – Flowers, Shrubs, and Pollinator Gardens

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about flowers, shrubs, and pollinator gardens. Learn how to have different colored blooms throughout the year and attract a diversity of pollinators to your landscape.

May – Vegetable Gardening For a Resilient Community

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about how to maximize food production through vegetable gardening. Learn some of the techniques to improve your homestead production and ensure a steady food supply throughout the year.

June – Garden and Landscape Diseases and Disorders

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about garden and landscape diseases and disorders. Learn how to tell the difference between viral infection, nutrient deficiency, or sun scald damage. We will talk about practices that you can use to avoid pest problems and minimize the need for pesticide applications.

July – 2 Minute Talks – Fire Ants, Brown Patch, Soil Testing, and 20 Other Topics

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about the topics that generate the most questions for extension agents. You will get the most important points in two minutes about each of these topics. The topics covered will be chosen by the audience!

Aug – Identify and Control Your Weeds

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about weeds. Learn how to identify them, avoid them, kill them, and in cases of the edible weeds, eat them.

Sept – Home Food Production and Preservation – The 4 Season Strategy

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about homesteading and how to have a food supply from your landscape all year long through various food preservation methods.

Oct – Edible Landscaping With Fruit

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about fruit. You can incorporate berries, tree fruit, nuts, and vine fruit seamlessly into your landscape design for a beautiful food production system.

Nov – Landscape Design – Putting It All Together

Join Dr. George Place, Catawba County Cooperative Extension Director in a presentation about landscape design. We will discuss basic landscape design and see some examples to put all of your gardening skills together in the canvas of your landscape.

This Advanced Gardener series is designed to help both beginner and advanced gardeners enjoy all of the health, enjoyment, and learning that comes from managing the home landscape and growing some of your own produce.
